Event #10 Match Play Championship
The Links GC
Friday-Sunday July 14th-16th, 2017
Par 65 Yardage 4745
The most exciting form of golf, match play. As important as 3 foot putts are, they go to a new level during match play. This year’s Southwest Junior Golf Tour Match Play Championship did not disappoint, in terms of delivering a roller coaster of emotions and thrills from participants and spectators alike. The weather was wonderful, the course, The Links GC, a little wet but a wonderful host, and the play, outstanding!! And of course, the Player of the Year points that can be accumulated shifted the standings as the tour enters into its last 8 days of competition.
The Semi-finals pitted 3 of the top 4 seeds against one another and a sleeper 14th seed in Ben Gleichauf. Wonderful sportsmanship and great play was on display as timely chip ins and clutch putting was the difference as Jimmy Clark, N. Olmsted def Connor Thomas, Medina 3 & 2 and Ben Gleichauf, N. Olmsted def Logan Bratsch, Olmsted Twp. 2 & 1. The Finals was a match against two long time veterans of the SWGT and good friends. At times it was hard to tell that they were competing against one another. In the end the consistent play of the 14th seed was key as Ben Gleichauf def Jimmy Clark 4 & 3. Great effort, great theatre, and great fun! Thank you gentlemen.
The Semi-Finals pitted a Founders Series member against the #1 seed in the event. In the end, as in many matches a few more putts fell for Emily Krutkiewicz, Medina and she was able to defeat Madeline Mindzora, Independence 2 & 1. Ericka Marano, Brunswick stayed steady on her way to a 4 & 3 victory over Alyssa Strongosky, Brecksville. The Final match was a back and forth contest that lasted 19 holes and saw Emily hit a clutch tee shot on hole #18 to about 4 feet to secure the 1 up victory over Ericka. Emily was the only girl to play 36 holes on Saturday, which means she had to play 55 holes in 27 hours to secure the title. Great play and outstanding sportsmanship from all the participants. An absolute pleasure to be a spectator! Thank you ladies.
The first Semi-Finals match was a grind as Colin Myslenski, Richfield def Jack Vichill, Westlake 2 & 1. In the second match Matt Girberti, Rocky River used long, straight drives and a hot putter to defeat Clayton Greiner, Brunswick 6 & 5. In the Finals, both Colin and Matt started off shaky but righted the ship to produce some spectacular golf. The match saw several 2 up leads go back to square. The outcome was certainly in doubt up until the last hole as Colin was able to chip within a couple of feet and Matt’s par putt slid by the hole. Two outstanding competitors and sportsman doing battle in the most gracious of manners. Great effort by all and an honor to watch top level play and stellar competition from quality young men! Thank you gentlemen.
