Southwest Junior Golf Tour
Event #1 Washington Park GC
Saturday May 20th, 2017
Par 29 Yardage 1449
The 24th season of the Southwest Junior Golf Tour got off to a cool start but heated up by the end as the first shot at Player of the Year points were scarfed up by both Tour veterans and Tour rookies. The temperature was in the 50’s to start and climbed into the 60’s with cloudy skies but no rain! One the largest groups of spectators, at a regular season event, enjoyed some good golf and a nice walk through a little slice of nature known as Washington Park GC.
Connor Thomas, Medina, started his round with consecutive birdies and then played solidly the rest of the way to card a one over 30 for medalist honors. Luke Seelie, N. Olmsted 32, soon to be Blue Streak of John Carroll University was runner-up. John Galik, Brecksville 36, and Dylan Champney, Sheffied Vlg. 36 carded the same score and John took third place by winning the scorecard playoff with his birdie on hole #9. Great start guys!!
Clayton Greiner, Brunswick, second year Tour veteran, fired a solid 39 for the top spot! Kevin Gordon, N. Royalton, playing in his first SWGT event shot 45 for second place. Mark Sowers, Brecksville 50 and Michael Berish, Brecksville 67 rounded out the top 4 positions. The race is on for POY and Clayton has made a strong statement early that, while moving into a new age group, he has plans on the top honor. This summer should be fun! Good luck gentlemen!
Maddie Harper, Independence 34 took the reins to put the Blue Devils in the top spot at the opening of the 2017 season for the SWGT. Isabella Goyette, Medina 35 finished second, partly as a result of her fantastic shot of hole #1, to about 5 feet and a 2 on the hardest hole on the course! Madeline Mindzora, Independence 37 did her best to take third as she tried to chase down her high school teammate but came up just a little short. If today’s event
is an indication of the level of golf that is going to played the rest of the summer, the Tour is in for wonderful excitement in the weeks to come! Outstanding effort ladies!
Emily Krutkiewicz, Medina 40 took medalist honors coming off her strong effort in last week’s Joe Hasse Cup event. Emily came up a little short in her match last Sunday but was able to rebound and get her first win of the season. There might be more to come but Hannah Stasiowski, Medina 50 and Payton Phillips, Medina 64, finishing second and third respectively as Tour rookies are just beginning their quest for the top spot. Fun times ahead!
Chase Coleman, Middleburg Hts., making his SWGT debut carded a 52 and took the top spot. Parker Phillips, Medina 54 and Alex Hedden, Cleveland 60 rounded out the top 3 spots. All first timers to the SWGT, these young men faired well under the pressure of tournament play. As the week’s go by, comfort level increases, and confidence grows this group is going to give the fans some wonderful golf and excitement this summer. Wonderful work gentlemen and good luck in the weeks ahead!
Event #2 is the 303 Classic played at Cossett Creek and Cherokee Hills GC on Tuesday June 13th and Wednesday June 14th. There are still spots available and time to register for this event. Have a great finish to your school year, keep practicing, and get geared up as the race for Southwest Junior Golf Tour Player of Year gets kicked into hyper-drive (Stars War reference) in 3 weeks!!
