Southwest Junior Golf Tour
Event #11 Founders Cup Championship
Monday July 25th, 2016
Par 72 Yardage 3875
The 23rd edition of the Founders Cup Championship, held at the beautiful Medina CC capped off another great season for the Southwest Junior Golf Tour. The weather, which could have been a whole lot worse, was overcast with a slight breeze for most of the day. The heat, which had been a factor for the entire month of July was held down a little so that the competition was not effected by it. The course was in great shape, the new format of stroke play and a shoot out was exciting and the awards banquet was awesome (and the shortest one ever)!
Boys 15-18 Jimmy Clark, N. Olmsted 74, Jacob Henyey, Brecksville 76, Joe Shepherd, Rocky River 78, Ben Gleichauf, N. Olmsted 78, Jake Moraca, Strongsville 79, and Danny Zahn, N. Olmsted 79 qualified for the Shoot Out part of the competition. Jimmy and Jake were the last two standing playing the final hole, where Jimmy was able to hold off Jake to claim the title of Founders Cup Champion. Jimmy’s win enabled him to slide by Brandon Netzel, N. Ridgeville to also take the Player of Year title. A wonderful battle, among great competitors today and during the entire season. Outstanding play gentlemen!
Girls 18-U Christina Williams, Medina 74, Madsion Butler, Hinckley 78, Lyndsay Blum, Independence 79, Alyson Kovach, Strongsville 85, Maddie Harper, Independence 106, Ginger Crist, Independence 114, Christina Tommer, Independence 116, and Kara Krsak, Independence 121 all qualified for the Shoot Out. Alyson and Christina battled to the very end, so much so that a tie breaker had to be used to determine the winner of the first ever Shoot Out. Alyson came out on top there but Christina took the title of Founders Cup Championship with 105 combined points. Great gallery followed this group as the pressure, excitement, competition, and fun was enormous. Lyndsay Blum had secured the Player of the Year title prior to the event but finished the season with a third place in the stroke play and a fourth place in the shoot out. Great work Lyndsay and great work all season long by all!
Boys 14-U Andrew Kaye, Avon Lake 87, Blake Shienkaruk, Medina 89, John Varley, Medina 93, Ross Williamson, Medina 94, Dylan Champney, Sheffield Vlg. 95, Tony Vannello, Medina 96, and John Galik, Brecksville 96 qualified for the Shoot Out. Tony, Andrew, and Dylan made it to the second to last hole and had to have a tie breaker there to have two of them move on. Tony and Andrew survived and battled on the last hold until Tony was able to finally win the shoot out. Andrew, though took the over all title of Founders Cup Champion with a combined 105 points. John Galik had secured the Player of the Year title prior to the event but finished like a true champion with a tie for sixth in the stoke play competition and a fourth place finish in the shoot out. Wonderful effort all season long all the young men in this age division!
Girls 14-U Emily Krutkiewicz, Medina 47, playing in her first Southwest Junior Golf Tour event and using a little home course knowledge took medalist honors. Ellen O’Leary, Rocky River 54 continued her steady play to finish second. Ellen also captured the title of Player of the Year. Great work ladies!
Clayton Greiner, Brunswick 47 took medalist honors and the Player of the Year title. Clayton may have played many events against himself and the golf course he made great strides in his game and has taken some very good steps toward becoming a serious contender for Player of the Year in the Boys 14-U division next season. Wonderful effort!
2016 for the Southwest Junior Golf Tour has come to a close but for many of the tour’s members the golfing season is just about to begin. Good luck to all next week during high school tryouts and over the next couple of months. The SWGT was developed and strives to assist its members in preparing for the next step. It is a belief of the SWGT that its members have an edge on others that did not spend the summer in a competitive golf environment. The SWGT’s success is a product of its member’s dedication and efforts. The proof is the great success that SWGT members have in September and October. The 23rd season of the SWGT was fantastic and we are Looking Forward to seeing SWGT members winning in October, partly due to them Winning with Us First!
Remember, any highlights or information that anyone would like to share with the entire tour, please send it to Derek at firstname.lastname@example.org and it will be put on to the tour’s website. Good luck to all and have a great school year!
Registration for next season will begin March 1st, 2017! Joe Hasse Cup invitations will be sent out in January!
