Event #9 Match Play Championship
The Links GC
Friday-Sunday July 15th-17th, 2016
Par 65 Yardage 4745
The truest form of golf. One player putting their skills up against another on a hole by hole basis to determine who’s game is better on this day. Each hole becomes a miniature tournament within the context of the individual match and the entire championship itself. The pressure is intense and the excitement is incredible. The SWGT Match Play Championship crowned its “Champion” golfers of the year just as the British held some little event doing the same. Separated by an ocean but connected by ” The Links”, great golf was on display!
Boys 15-18 Luke Seelie, N. Olmsted defeated long time friend Jimmy Clark, N. Olmsted 1up in the morning and then caught fire in the afternoon and claimed the championship by defeating Brandon Netzel, N. Ridegville 6 & 4. Brandon made it to the finals by defeating Great Lakes Conference rival Lukas Vollman, Hinckley 1up. Birdies were flying all day! Though the competition was fierce these gentlemen showed tremendous sportsmanship through out the championship. Gentlemen first, competitors second. Spectators were a part of a very special event! Thank you and great work gentlemen.
Girls 18-U Christina Williams, Medina much like Luke, took down her close friend and team mate, Madison Butler, Hinckley 1up 19 holes in the semi-finals. Then she continued her wonderful play against Lyndsay Blum, Independence defeating her 6 & 4 to take the title. Good putting and great driving allowed Christina to take down two fantastic players. Lyndsay defeated fellow Blue Devil, Maddie Harper, Independence 5 & 3 to get to the finals. Great moment of the event when Christina and Lyndsay played through a family with a nine year old girl and she watched to these two giants crush the ball down the fairway. There was no way that that little girl was not inspired! Wonderful work today ladies!
Boys 14-U Tony Vannello, Medina defeated John Galik, Brecksville, the number 1 seed, 8 & 6 in the semi-finals. Tony continued his wonderfully consistent play by defeating Liam Doyle, Westlake 5 & 4 in the finals. Liam battled Dylan Champney, Sheffield Vlg. for 19 holes in the semi-finals to secure his 1up victory. Great sportsmanship, again on display. These players helped each other out, cheered each other on, thrived on the competition of the event, and most importantly enjoyed the company of their fellow competitors. Golf, in its truest form. Outstanding effort gentlemen!
