Event #2 the 303 Classic is in the books and it was a unique way to start the Southwest Junior Golf Tour’s first June tournament. The weather was over cast and chilly at Cossett Creek, it looked like October and then at Cherokee Hills the first starting time temperature was 48 degrees. Not bad for November but of course it is June. To add to the fun the wind blew at a constant 10 to 15 mph bringing the wind chill temperature down. Wind chill temperatures stayed in the low to mid 50’s most of the day. Tough conditions to play in! The only plus, if it can be considered such, was that the Cicadas, even after being a sleep for 17 years, decided to stay fairly quiet as they were also trying to stay warm! Though the weather was cold and ugly the play was hot and excellent!
Boys 15-18 Jimmy Clark (N. Olmsted) came out firing in his first event of the year, posting 75-75 150 to take Medalist honors. Brandon Netzel (de’ville) 76-78 154 tried to keep pace but came up a little short and took second. Dylan Boff (Broadview Hts.) 79-78 157 and Chad Dubiel (Hinckley) tied for third place and Dylan edged Chad out in the scorecard playoff. Danny Zahn (N. Olmsted) 84-77 161 and Jack Lee (Bay Village) 87-74 161 tied for fifth as both made large leaps forward from day one with low rounds on day 2 under trying conditions. The race for Player of the Year is on and the field is deep as to who might be on top when the season is over. Good luck gentlemen!
Girls 18-U Madison Butler (Hinckley) 77-74 151 continued her wonderful form from last SWGT season and the high school season to take Medalist honors. Madison has committed to be a lady Viking in 2017. Plundering the SWGT must just be a warm up! Lyndsay Blum (Independence) 88-81 169 took second place by playing better on day 2, under the more trying conditions. Tough competitor but grinds away with smile on her face at all times! Devon Matson (Brunswick) 88-91 179 took advantage of home course knowledge and secured third place. Audrey Zedella (Hinckley) 97-95 193 stayed consistent during the unpleasant conditions and finished fourth. Fantastic effort by all and special mention to all the girls from the Independence golf team that are participating on the tour this season. Your efforts now will pay off in the Fall! Good luck to all!
Boys 14-U Ross Willamson (Medina) 94-78 172 came strong on day 2, being an excellent hockey player the cold is not as much of a factor for him, and grabbed the Medalist honor. Blake Shienkaruk (Medina) 91-88 179, not to be out done, improved his score on day 2 to take second place. Dylan Champney (Sheffield Vlg.) 93-90 183, Player of the Year in the Boys 12-13 age group last season is working to secure another POY trophy as he finished third. John Galik (Brecksville) 94-97 191 took fourth as he battled the conditions and stayed consistent for two days. Player of the Year will require some wonderful effort this year as there are several quality players that have already proven that they have the game and desire to take the top honor. Gook luck gentlemen!
Girls 14-U Maddie Debnar (Medina) fired a 48 to take Medalist honors. Wonderful golf swing, gracious, and tough competitor as she played right along side the boys and did more than just hold her own. This Maddie’s first win of the season and will certainly not be her last. Keep up the good work Maddie!
Boys 13-U Clayton Greiner (Brunswick) 58 over came some early struggles to right the ship and secure Medalist honors. Mark Sowers (Brecksville) 64, playing in his first event started well and then ran into a few issues down the stretch. A few nerves, the elements, and the newness of competition may have taken a toll on these young competitors but they are that, competitors and there is not doubt that their play will improve Player of the Year honor will be well deserved! Keep up the good work gentlemen!
