The 22nd edition of the Founders Cup Championship and Awards Banquet was a smashing success! (Sorry Jim) The temperature was the highest that the Southwest Junior Golf Tour had to deal with this season but all players handled it well as they traveled the 27 holes of Medina CC. The competition was fantastic, the course was in great shape, especially the quick greens, the food was tasty, and the recognition of the finest junior golfers in Northeast Ohio was tremendous!
Boys 16-18 27 holes was not enough for Blake Rudy (North Royalton), Austin Jenkins (North Royalton), or Emmett Caskey (Uniontown) as they tied at 114 and needed 4 extra holes to determine the winner of the Founders Cup. Blake was the first exit the playoff and Austin and Emmett played #9 Green, then #1 Red, and then #9 Green one more time before Emmett sealed the deal with a clutch par putt. Outstanding show gentlemen! Austin’s 2nd place finish gave him 100 Player of the Year points and enough to take the top spot away from Jimmy Clark (North Olmsted) who’s 124 was good for 10th place but no POY points. A hard fought season. The battle was exciting to witness over the past 10 weeks. Great work!
Boys 14-15 Jake Moraca (Strongsville) continued his sizzling hot summer by carding a 115 to capture the Founders Cup title by 4 shots. Jake is just days away from taking his first swings as a Saint Ignatius Wildcat! Good luck Jake. Gentle Ben Gleichauf (North Olmsted) grabbed second with 119. Ben, a screaming St Ed’s Eagle will be looking for Jake this Fall as these two wonderful players will certainly be leaders on their respective teams. Third place went to Cameron Jean (Medina) who also carded a 119. Luke Seelie’s 6th place finish, 128 and no POY points did not effect the race for Player of the Year as Jacob Shook (North Roylaton) took 5th place with 127. Jacob received 70 POY points but they were not enough as Luke held on the to the top and is the 2015 Player of the Year. Wonderful work gentlemen!
Girls 16-18 Loren Kreider (Westlake) set the 27 hole tournament record with her score of 110. Loren not only took the Founders Cup top spot but also the Player of the Year honors. Saving her best golf for last, Loren left no doubt that she deserved and earned the title of Player of the Year! Outstanding! Strongsville came real STRONG as Alyson Wohlleber secured second with 131 and Andrea Howse shot 144 to take third. McKenna DiCapua (Avon Lake) battled hard all and carded 161 for fourth place. These ladies have steadily improved over the course of the summer and are just hitting their strides as the Fall season is fast approaching. The fun and excitement is just beginning! Good luck ladies!
Girls 13-15 Drive, fierce competitiveness, athleticism, and a super attitude were on display as Lyndsay Blum (Independence) fired a 137 and won Founder Cup medalist honors. Lyndsay has taken her game to a new level over the past 12 months and she is not done. If Fall golfers do not know her name now they will by October 1st. Great work! Marina Wilson (Avon Lake) continued her consistent level of good play as she fired 147 to take second place and add another 100 points to distance herself further as she claimed the Player of the Year title. Great effort, commitment, and passion for the game were on display all season long as Marina marched to her way to the top spot. Outstanding! Rounding out the top 3 was Alyson Kovach (Strongsville) with 152. Alyson may have come up a little short on the score card but for bringing style to the SWGT she most certainly took the top spot. Great effort all season ladies and good luck this Fall!
Boys 12-13 Dylan Champney (Sheffield Village) struggled on just a few of the 27 holes and his 146 usually would have been good enough to take the top spot but this year John Galik was a putting machine and carded 134 to capture the Founders Cup title leaving Dylan to settle for second place. Jack Vichill (Westlake) battled, as he normally does, to take third place with 150. Charles Beatty (Berea) was not far behind in fourth place with his 159. Dylan had already secured Player of the Year honors before play started but as he has done all year he went out and played as hard as he could. A wonderful champion and an excellent example of what a SWGT Player of the Year is supposed to be. To all the young men is this group, great work all year!
