Southwest Junior Golf Tour
Event #10 Match Play Championship
Thursday-Saturday July 16th-18th, 2015
Cossett Creek GC
Par 72 Yardage 6615
Two wonderful weather days sandwiched around one so-so weather day. But all matches were completed and another Southwest Junior Golf Tour Match Play Championship is in the record books. The tour went through some extra Gatorade over the last three days as there were some parched throats at Cossett Creek GC created by the dreaded “knee knocker” four footers to halve a hole or to win one. All the ups and downs associated with match play were on display along with some tough and gutty golf!
Boys 12-13 After a 1 up victory over John Galik #3 (Brunswick), Jack Vichill #2 (Westlake) ran out of gas against the #1 seed Dylan Champney (Sheffield Village). Jack fought hard but the long hitting Dylan outlasted him for a 4 & 3 win to take the title. Wonderful effort gentlemen!
Girls 13-18 The quarterfinal matches, in this combined bracket, pitted high school team mates and friends Christina Williams the #2 seed (Medina) against #7 seed Madison Butler (Hinckley). Madison squeaked by Christina with a 1 up victory as she made her way to the finals against the #1 seeded player, Loren Kreider (Westlake). Madison continued her great play by jumping into the lead early and never looking back as she took the title with a 6 & 5 victory. Best sportsmanship moment of the week, Christina coming out to watch the Finals match and giving both players tremendous support. Outstanding! Madison’s week started with a win at the Ohio State Junior Girls Championship in Marion and ended with a SWGT Match Play Championship. A very good week, for all! Congratulations to all the ladies this week!
Boys 14-15 Terrific highlight of the event during the quarterfinal match between Carson Wirebaugh #12 (Medina) and Tyler Snyder #4 (North Royalton) that went 20 holes. Largest gallery of the event as 20 contestants, SWGT officials, parents, and Cossett Creek GC workers watched the last two holes. Carson came away with the 1 up victory after Tyler’s last putt lipped out. Fun stuff!! Luke Seelie (North Olmsted) #1 seed and Jacob Shook (North Roylaton) #3 seed played steady and consistent golf to reach the finals. Luke secured a hard fought 1 up victory as Jacob chipped out of the trees on the par 5 18th, after Luke had hit his second shot to about 90 yards, and then he proceeded to blast a 3 metal from 240 yards, up hill, against the wind to 5 yards short of the green. Luke not stunned hit his approach to 20 feet and two putted for a par and his 1 up victory. Great golf!!
Boys 16-18 Its a bird, its a plane, no its Underdog!! #13 seed Griffin Stevens (Brecksville) moved through his portion of the bracket until he met up with #8 Joe Shepherd in the Semi-Final match that Joe was able to take with a slim 1 up win. Griffin’s run ended as his last putt, to extend the match, just slid by the hole. A wonderful run of golf! Joe Onorato (Hinckley) #6 seed was poised to take a seat in the Final match but #2 seed Jimmy Clark used his keen short game to make a series of pars that secured his 2 & 1 victory. Joe (Shepherd) and Jimmy traded jabs during the Finals match but in the end, Jimmy stayed hot with the putter and was able to come away with a 3 & 2 victory. Just a fantastic three days of competition from all members of this age group!!
Just two more events remain. Event #11 Pine Hills on Monday July 20th and the Founders Cup Championship at Medina CC on Monday July 27th. All arre invited to participate in the Founders Cup. If you have not entered, there is still time to do so. Contact Derek at email@example.com.
