Event #8 Independence Classic
Tuesday/Wednesday July 7th-8th, 2015
Valleaire/Sleepy Hollow GCs
Par 72/71 Yardage 6528/6630
Happy Birthday America! You are 239 years old and the Southwest Junior Golf Tour is 22. To celebrate the SWGT ate some pizza, played some golf, and watched a spectacular fireworks show, brought about by the fierce competition! The weather cooperated and the Independence Classic dodged the rain. Both Valleaire and Sleepy Hollow GCs were in wonderful shape and the soft conditions allowed for some low scoring.
Boys 16-18 The sons of North Royalton battled mightily! Austin Jenkins took second with 149, Michael Onorato took third with 156, Blake Rudy took fourth with 161, and Joe Onorato took fifth with 163. But the favorite son of North Olmsted, Jimmy Clark took on all comers and shot 72-75 147 to capture the medalist position. Austin still has a commanding lead in the Player of the Year race but it looks like there are a few players that are going to do all they can to make him work for it! Good luck to all and enjoy the competition!
Boys 14-15 Ray Kman (Richfield) stayed steady with rounds of 82-87 169 and took advantage of an opportunity to secure his first SWGT victory. Tyler Snyder (North Royalton) shot 82-91 173 to finish in second place. Jacob Henyey, 86-88 (Brecksville) and Jacob Shook 83-91 (North Royaton) both ended with 174 totals. Jacob Henyey grabbed the third place position by winning the scorecard playoff. Lesson of the day: all participants in this age group had to figure out how old the United States of America is before they could tee off. No group was delayed in teeing off but it was close a couple of times. Good work gentlemen!
Girls 16-18 Christina Williams (Medina) captured another title with rounds of 81-83 164. Grace under pressure is the only way to describe the ease at which Christina appears as she fiercely battles the course, the competition, and her own emotions. Fun to watch! Elizabeth Petack (Hinckley) did well with rounds of 92-95 187 to secure second place over Nikki Johnson (Cleveland) and her rounds of 93-94 for the same 187 total. Elizabeth took second by winning the scorecard playoff. Rachael Sladky (North Olmsted) finished just a shot out side the top three with 92-96 188. Fantastic effort ladies!
Girls 13-15 She came, she saw, she conquered! Lyndsay Blum (Independence) fired 86-85 171 for medalist honors. Rock solid play for two days. A wonderful display of straight driving, accurate irons, and good putting. Most importantly, she smiled, non-stop, for two days. Awesome! Alyson Kovach (Strongsville) 99-98 and Marina Wilson (Avon Lake) 100-97 both totaled 197. Alyson secured second place by winning the scorecard playoff. Makayla Sheehan (Rocky River) took fourth with 105-118 223 and Madeline Harper (Independence) came in fifth with 118-108 226. All the ladies in this age group are wonderful to watch as they work and compete as hard as any player of the course. Great work ladies!
Boys 12-13 Dylan Champney (Sheffield Vlg.) 88-106 194 will get some needed rest after his first place finish in the Independence Classic. He was able to hold on as John Galik (Brecksville) played steady with 98-101 199 and did what he could to try and catch Dylan. Jack Vichill (Westlake) 96-117 and Charles Beatty (Berea) 102-111 both totaled 213. Jack took third by winning the scorecard playoff’s second tier action. First tier is the total of holes #3, 6, 9, 12, and 15. If they are the same then a sudden-death matching of the cards is done starting on hole #1. That is where Jack prevailed. William Winovich (Chagrin Falls) 122-124 246 played his last round with the SWGT this season as his summer will be consumed with other activities. See you next season Will! Wonderful effort gentlemen!
