Event #5 Western Rodeo
Forest Hills/Grey Hawk GCs
Monday/Tuesday June 22nd/23rd, 2015
Par 70/72 Yardage 6316/6687
Rain, rain go away, come back another day! Overcast, soggy, and humid conditions with a late afternoon rain shower started this year’s SWGT Western Rodeo at Forest Hills GC. Then a most impressive lightening show and very heavy rains greeted day two at Grey Hawk GC. The event ended in sunshine and a beautiful summer breeze. Welcome to Northeast Ohio! Lift, clean, and place (in your own fairway) was in play during both rounds which put a premium on accuracy as each course was playing as long as they could play.
Boys 16-18 Joe Onorato (N. Royalton) opened with a 73 but was unable to keep pace on day two as he carded an 81 for a 154 total and third place. Jimmy Szpak (Hinckley) played consistently well each day firing rounds of 74-78 152 to take second place. Nick Brunsman (Independence) 77-74 151 stormed to a one shot victory, shooting the low round of the day. The scene of the day though went to Austin Jenkins (N. Royalton) 77-85 162 (7th place) who took off his shoes and socks, stood in the water, and hit his approach on hole #14 on the green. To top it off he made the putt for birdie. Tough conditions handled by some very tough competitors!
Boys 14-15 Ben Brej (Rocky River) raced to the lead on day one with an even par 70 and finished his conquest of the SWGT’s Western Rodeo with a 79, 149 total. He bested Ben Gliechauf’s (N. Olmsted) 76-79 155 by six shots. Danny Soucie (Olmsted Falls) tied Ben at 155 with rounds of 72-83 but lost the scorecard playoff to finish third. Evan Gray (Brunswick) slipped with a second round 86 after opening with a 77, 163 total to secure 4th place. With the courses playing long, due to the conditions, these gentlemen worked some magic with their short games making birdies and saving pars as they battled for the top spot. Great work!
Girls 16-18 Christina Williams (Medina) carded consistent rounds of 82-80 162 to take medalist honors by eight shots. Again, with the course playing long, all the hazards, and the wind picking up at the end of the day when the ladies were still on the course, Christina’s second round 80 was very impressive. Second place was taken by the ever present Loren Kreider (Westlake) with rounds of 81-89 170. A close third was Sarah Warkin (Avon) 81-90 171. Devon Matson (Brunswick) improved her showing from day 1 as she went 105-100 205. When these ladies tee it up there is always wonderful finesse, great power, and fierce competition on display. Great show ladies!
Girls 13-15 Marina Wilson (Avon Lake) took the top spot with rounds of 98-93 191. There may not be another player on the SWGT that can match Marina’s intensity. She may be jumping up and down inside but on the outside she is clam, cool, and collected. She just goes about her business of trying to play the very best she can every round. Fun to watch! A trio of Strongsville’s best lady golfers took the next three spots. Alyson Kovach came in second with consistent rounds of 111-110 221. Third place was Julia Estephan 115-126 241 and following in fourth was Rosemary Zaleski 118-129 247. Look our Marina a herd of Mustangs are trying to run you down! Wonderful work by all!
Boys 12-13 Dylan Champney (Sheffield Village) fired two rounds 0f 92, 184 total to take medalist honors. Power is on display when Dylan is on the course. Once the rest of his game matches the level of his length, which looks like not to long in coming, the junior golf community is going to have to make room for another very talented player. Outstanding effort today!
Next up two one-day events. First is on Monday June 29th at Columbia Hills CC. At present their are 91 competitors registered for this event. The largest field so far this season. Second, wrapping up the month of June on Tuesday the 30th is Rawiga CC. Two wonderful venues to end the first part of the SWGT’s 2015 campaign.
