Event #3 Buzzard Challenge
Hinckley Hills/Ironwood GCs
Tuesday/Wednesday June 16th/17th, 2015
Par 71/71 (142) Yardage 6487/6358
The buzzards returned to Hinckley once again. This time though, they came in soaked. Light rain fell most of day one and fell the last couple of hours on day two. Lift, clean, and place was instituted for both rounds as both courses were very wet but overall in very good shape. Going was tough for all, as rain suits were taken on and off, umbrellas were up then down, and grips stayed wet for most of the two days. Tournament golf at its finest.
Boys 16-18 Jimmy Clark (N. Olmsted) was not able to hold on to the lead after his day one 78 (80 158) as one of Hinckley’s favorite sons, Chad Dubiel stormed into the top spot with rounds of 79-75 154. Chad was followed by a crew of N. Royalton’s favorite sons, Jason Garnet 78-79 157, Austin Jenkins 83-74 157, and Michael Onorato 78-79 157. Watching these young men compete is great fun. They are wonderful competitors and better sportsman!
Boys 14-15 Wow! How does a competitive golfer make a statement? He shoots a 3 under 68 and separates himself from the field by 11 shots. Ben Gleichauf (N. Olmsted) playing with the lead after shooting 78 (146 total) took medalist honors. Not to be overshadowed, Ben Brej (Rocky River) fired 78-79 157 to take second. Ross Scherler continued his Player of the Year leader style of play with rounds of 80-78 158 and third place.
Girls 16-18 Michaela Thomas (N. Royalton) fought valiantly with a opening, leading round of 86 and followed with a strong 89 but it just not enough as Player of the Year leader Loren Kreider (Westlake) rebounded from an opening 88 to fire 81 169 and take the top spot. Elizabeth Petkac, playing her first SWGT event of the season placed thired with 102-101 203. Both courses, with all the ups and downs, and wet conditions made for some challenging golf. Great work ladies!
Girls 13-15 Marina Wilson (Avon Lake) took medalist honors with rounds of 101-102 203. Meleana Santivasci (Medina) was second 108-111 219, followed by Alyson Kovach (Strongsville) 122-105 227, and Madeline Mindzora (Independence) 132-126 258. The terrain of the both courses and the wet conditions made the Buzzard Challenge more of a pure physical challenge then a golf challenge. With very little roll the coursed played very long. These ladies took the challenge and all played with great enthusiasm and determination. Wonderful work ladies!
Boys 12-13 Charles Beatty (Berea) fired 118-102 220 to take the top spot by just a single shot over John Galik (Brecksville) 115-106 221. Dylan Champney (Sheffield Village) came in third with 114-109 223, fourth was William Winovich 119-11313 232, and fifth place went to Brandon Doehne (Avon) 137-141 278. Quirky highlight for these boys is that Brandon captured both proximity prizes for the event. Charles got the hardware and Brandon got the towels!
