The weather held, the temps were perfect, yet notice was served at event #2, The 303 Classic! Player of the Year cannot be crowned at event #2, of this early 2015 SWGT season, but individuals can certainly start staking their claim to the title. Middle schools and high schools in Northeast Ohio may be letting out for the summer, but some summer golf schooling is about to begin!
Boys 16-18 Jimmy Clark (N. Olmsted) made is tour debut with rounds of 72/73 – 145 total and his first victory of the season. A switch in age divisions has not stopped this 2014 14-15 Player of the Year from continuing his excellent play. Christian Lee (Fairview Park) 79/76 – 155 and Austin Jenkins (N. Royalton) 80/76 – 156 rounded out the top 3. Both veterans of the tour that believe, just as Ricky Bobby, that if you are not first you’re last!
Boys 14-15 Jake Moraca (Strongsville) took the top spot, as another 2014 Player of the Year that has jumped up an age division, yet he shows no signs up letting up. Jake shot 77/75 – 152 to win the gold medal. On his heels were tour veterans Ben Gleichauf (N. Olmsted) 78/81 – 159 and Ross Scherler (Medina) 82/79 – 161. The depth and quality players in this age division should make for outstanding action as the season progresses. The fun has just begun!
Girls 16-18 Loren Kreider (Westlake) continued her dominate play on the SWGT, as she attempts a three-peat in the same age division. Only Sarah Rachul has ever done that before! Loren was medalist with rounds of 81/79 – 160. Again, tour veterans Christina Williams (Medina) 84/78 – 162, one of the fiercest competitors on the tour, and Nikki Johnson 84/83 – 167 rounded out the top 3. Can Loren take her third title or will a young lioness or wiley tour veteran keep her from history? What a summer!
Girls 13-15 Medalist honors went to Lyndsay Blum (Independence) 83/87 – 170. Lyndsay burst onto the SWGT scene last year and has developed into one of the tour’s top players. She will be tough to beat! Marina Wilson (Avon Lake) 85/90 – 175 and Alyson Kovach (Strongsville) 101/ 99 – 200 gave it their all to take second and third respectively. This is the largest group of girls, 13-15 age division, that has been in 10 years on the SWGT, which should make the season very special and the Fall golf in Northeast Ohio very exciting!
Boys 12-13 Dylan Champney (Sheffield Village) fired 95/93 – 188 to take the top spot and win his first ever SWGT event. Jack Vichill (Westlake), Charles Beatty (Berea), Brandon Duehne (Avon), and William Winovich (Chagrin Falls) battled hard for second place carding 220, 221, 221, and 222 respectively. These young men may have been last to tee off but they worked hard to play the very best that they could play. Their summer and golfing season have just begun!
Congratulations to all of the winners! Next up is the Buzzard Challenge next Tuesday and Wednesday (16th/17th) at Ironwood and Hinckley Hills GCs. The courses and competition for Player of the Year only get more challenging and intense as the season moves forward! Keep practicing, stayed focused, and as the tour motto states, Keep Looking Ahead!
