Summary: The day started out chilly but by the end the sun was shinning bright and the golf was heating up. Our first event saw many past members of the tour and some fresh new faces eager to make their mark on this, the 22nd edition of the Southwest Junior Golf Tour. The entire tournament staff of the SWGT Dave, Derek, Jim, and Joe are excited about the quality of our membership and the quality of our event sites. This is already shaping up to be one of the best seasons ever. Good Luck to all, as the season has only just begun!
Boys 16-18 Long time tour member Austin Jenkins (N. Royalton) took the first event of the season with a score of 35, followed by two other veterans of the tour Derek Smith (Parma) 36, and rounding out the top 3 was Joe Shepherd (Rocky River) with the same score but losing the scorecard playoff 10 to 11.
Boys 14-15 Coming off his fine performance at the Joe Hasse Cup Luke Seelie (North Olmsted) topped the field with a 35 for his first victory of the season. Finishing only a stroke back was Ross Scherler (Medina) with a 36. There was a three way tie for third at 37. Cameron MacLellan (Medina) won the tie breaker over both Evan Gray (Brunswick) and Tyler Snyder(North Royalton). The tie breaking scores (holes 3,6, and 9 added together) were 8, 10, and 13 respectively.
Girls 16-18 Another long time tour member Loren Kreider (Westlake) secured her first victory of the season with the lowest score of the day, 29. Erin Sheehan (Rocky River), a tour rookie, fired the second lowest round of the day 31. A wonderful battle between fantastic competitors. Securing 3rd place was Madison Gardner (Avon) with a 39. Great start to the season ladies!
Girls 13-15 The largest field for any age group today saw a tour rookie, Rachel Hetman (North Olmsted), fire a wonderful 34 to take medalist honors and a second season veteran, Lyndsay Blum (Independence) following with a fine 37 . Third place went to Marina Wilson (Avon Lake), 40. It was wonderful to have so many young and talented golfers participating in this age group. It should make for a great race for the Player of the Year honor. Good Luck ladies!
