A beautiful summer day was the back drop of another wonderful SWGT event at Pine Hills GC. One of, if not, the best competitive field that the SWGT has had all season did not disappoint when it comes to good scores and brilliant athletes pushing one another to be the very best they can be. With one more event left in the Southwest Junior Golf Tour’s season and the beginning of the high school season just around the corner, there are a host of players that are peaking at the right moment.
Boys 16-18 Nick Schley (Brunswick) used a little home course knowledge to grab a 2 shot victory over Danny Zahn (N. Olmsted) and Garrett Orseno (N. Ridgeville). Nick shot 75 to Danny’s and Garrett’s 77’s. Brian Tucci (Rocky River), coming off his runner-up finish in the Match Play Championship fired a 79 for a solo 4th place finish. Player of the Year points leader Austin Jenkins (N. Royalton) took today off to compete down in Columbus at the Ohio State University Golf Club on the recommendation of his future Hiram golf coach. All will be ready for next Monday’s Founders Cup Championship!
Boys 14-15 Ben Jones (Strongsville) and Ben Gleichauf (N. Olmsted) both carded 76’s. Ben Jones claimed the victory with a scorecard victory that went past the holes 3,6,9,12,15, and 18 accumulative to the sudden-death scorecard match, starting at hole #1. Player of the Year points leader Jimmy Clark (N. Olmsted) shot a 77 for 3rd place. A solid follow up to his Match Play Championship win. Brandon Netzel (Elyria) and Josh Hodges (Stongsville ) fired 79 to share 4th place. The crystal to be had at the Founders Cup Championship will be well deserved as there are several players that have taken their games to the next level. Good luck gentlemen!
Girls 16-18 Loren Kreider (Westlake) continues to stake her claim as the Player of the Year as she shot 79 to take medalist honors. A fantastic follow to her Match Play Championship win. Madison Butler (Hinckley) shot 83 for second place and Hallie Schuld (Hnckley) carded an 86 for third place. With Westlake, Highland, Strongsville, Medina, Avon, Independence, and Parma schools well represented on the SWGT this season, ladies high school golf will be very exciting this August, September, and hopefully October.
Girls 13-15 Christina Williams (Medina) finally broke through with her first victory of the season. Christina and Alicia Porvasnik (Hinckley) both shot 81 and Christina took the scorecard playoff. Sophia Trombetta (Independence), on her way to Pinehurst NC to compete, where both the Men and Women US Open’s were just recently held, carded an 83 to take solo 3rd. Good luck Sophia!
Sophia has taken an 80 point lead in the Player of the Year race with only 1 event remaining. Good luck ladies!
Boys 12-13 Jake Moraca (Strongsville) and Adam Cook (Amherst) continued their Match Play Championship duel as they both carded 78’s today. Jake came out on top by just 1 shot when the accumulative holes were added together. Tow wonderful competitiors pushing each other to play their very best. Andrew Lampner took home the proximity shot on hole #8 with a shot to about 20 feet. This age group will have its biggest field competing next week at the Founders Cup Championship. Jake will be taking a 70 point lead into the final event. Good luck to all!
Founders Cup Championship starting times will be posted on Wednesday. They will begin at 10am for the 27 hole event and the awards banquet will begin approximately at 6pm or as soon after the completion of play as possible.
